Nobody buys something online and gives much thought to what happens between clicking “order” and a parcel arriving at their door.

That’s probably a good thing.

Behind it sits a ridiculous amount of complexity.

Carriers. Labels. Tracking. Returns. Checkout options. Service points. International deliveries. And huge spikes in volume that don’t politely warn you before arriving.

I’m working with one of Europe’s leading ecommerce shipping platforms.

They connect thousands of online retailers with carriers across Europe, helping them manage the entire shipping journey from checkout through to returns.

They’ve already built real scale.

This role is about making sure the platform underneath it can take them where they want to go next.

I’m helping them hire a Staff Platform Engineer.

And this is a genuine Staff-level seat.

Not a Senior Engineer vacancy with a shinier title and exactly the same expectations.

The platform team is small, properly strong technically and full of opinions.

They need somebody who can bring clarity when there are several perfectly reasonable ways forward.

Someone who can help set direction, turn debate into decisions and build a platform that allows engineering teams to move quickly without making reliability somebody else’s problem.

You won’t do that by walking in and immediately telling everybody what they’ve got wrong.

In fact, the hiring manager ruled someone out this week for doing exactly that.

He wants somebody who asks questions before giving answers.

Someone who wants to understand why a decision was made, what problem it solved and which trade-offs came with it.

Someone who can influence strong engineers, manage their own stakeholders and have difficult conversations without waiting for somebody else to clear the path.

AWS, GitLab, Argo CD and Terraform is roughly the shape of the platform.

An exact keyword match matters far less than how you think, the questions you ask and whether you’ve genuinely operated at this level before.
