Senior Data Platform Engineer – AI, GraphRAG & Knowledge Systems
Amsterdam | 100k - €115k | Permanent / Fixed term contract
We’re working with an early-stage AI company building an AI-native operating system for CFOs.
The challenge is bringing together fragmented financial and operational data from different systems, understanding how that information connects, and making it reliable enough for AI agents to reason against.
That’s where this role comes in.
We’re looking for a Senior Data Platform Engineer to take ownership of the underlying data platform, working directly with the incoming CTO and helping shape some of the most important architectural decisions the business will make.
It’s an opportunity to build something from its early stages, rather than inherit years of technical decisions.
What You’ll Be Working On
- Designing and building a scalable data platform that supports AI-powered financial intelligence.
- Developing GraphRAG and knowledge graph capabilities that allow AI systems to understand entities, relationships and context.
- Working with SurrealDB, combining graph and vector database capabilities.
- Building reliable ingestion pipelines and integrations across financial, accounting and operational systems.
- Developing entity relationships, knowledge representations and ontology enrichment.
- Ensuring the data is accurate, traceable and usable by downstream AI agents.
- Making architectural decisions around performance, reliability and scalability.
- Taking technical ownership of the platform as the company grows.
What We’re Looking For
Someone with a strong software engineering foundation who understands data infrastructure and has genuine experience building graph-based retrieval systems.
The important areas:
- Hands-on experience with GraphRAG or production graph-based retrieval.
- Strong knowledge of graph databases such as Neo4j, SurrealDB or similar.
- Experience working with knowledge graphs, entity relationships and knowledge representation.
- Strong Python and backend engineering skills.
- Experience designing data ingestion pipelines and integrating complex external systems.
- Confidence making architectural decisions and owning systems end to end.
- Experience building reliable, production-grade software rather than just prototypes.
You don’t need to have worked with SurrealDB specifically.
We’re more interested in engineers who understand the underlying concepts and can apply that experience to a new platform.
Why It’s Interesting
This isn’t a traditional data engineering role focused purely on moving information from one system to another.
You’re building the foundations that determine how an AI product understands and reasons about real-world financial information.
You’ll work directly with the CTO, have genuine influence over the architecture and help establish how the platform evolves.
There’s also the potential to grow into a technical leadership position and build out the data engineering function as the company scales.
The Setup
- Small, early-stage engineering team with a roughly 50/50 gender split.
- Remote-first, with the preference to get together around once a week in Amsterdam.
- €100,000–€115,000 base salary.
- 0.5–0.75% equity.
- Direct access to technical decision-making.
- Significant ownership from day one.
Interested?
If you’ve built production systems involving GraphRAG, knowledge graphs or graph-based retrieval, we’d love to have a conversation.
